Description:Australian journalist Guy Hamilton (Mel Gibson) is sent to Indonesia to cover the rise to power of right-wing military President Sukarno. He makes friends with photographer Billy Kwan (Linda Hunt) and British embassy worker Jill Bryant (Sigourney Weaver), and they both give him information that makes his stories the best. Billy becomes disenchated with the government and protests, which gets him killed. Jill decides to head back to London. When civil war breaks out, Guy determines to stick it out, but he's soon injured and almost loses an eye. He heads for the airport and, at the same time, manages to save his assistant Kumar, who is on the government hit list. He makes it to the plane at the last minute and reunites with Jill.

Review - Year of Living Dangerously, The

Mostly, it just made me glad I don't live in Southeast Asia. Gibson was good as the driven journalist. Linda Hunt, playing a man, did so well I didn't realize she was a woman until I read the reviews afterwards.
