Description:Drifter Frank Chambers (John Garfield) gets a job at a roadside diner owned by old drunk Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway) and his much younger attractive wife Cora (Lana Turner). Nick and Cora begin an affair and decide to do away with Nick. They knock him over the head in his bathtub, but Nick recovers, although the D.A. suspects it was a murder attempt. When Nick decides to sell the diner and move to Canada, Cora and Frank try again by getting Nick drunk and rolling his car down a hill. They botch this too, and Frank goes over the cliff with Nick. Nick dies but Frank lives. The D.A. gets Frank to sign a paper that Cora killed Nick and tried to kill him, but a smart lawyer somehow gets her off with probation. Frank and Cora go back to the diner, but they hate each other. They get married just to keep people from talking and, eventually, begin loving each other. They're out driving and kissing and Frank hits a sign. Cora dies, and Frank is convicted of murdering her and gets the chair.

Reviews for The Postman Always Rings Twice

Review - Postman Always Rings Twice, The

Very little about this movie made any sense. Why would Cora, who was desperate enough to escape her poor upbringing to marry the much older Nick then throw it all away on Frank, a drifter who could offer her nothing. What was going on with the court scene, where both parties signed confessions and one of them plead guilty but then a bunch of obscure legal phrases are thrown around and suddenly both are free. Why would the public, who flocked to the diner to see the woman who killed her husband be offended that another man lived there? Why is this movie considered a classic? Lana Turner may have been technically beautiful, but she seemed cold and manipulating and unappealing. Garfield's character of Frank just seemed to be around because somebody had to be. Kellaway's acting was fine but he was terribly miscast as the husband of Cora. There were so many attempts to run away and murder and scheme that I quit caring, and it took me a long time to get through the movie.
