| Description: | Prosecuting attorney John Sargent (Fred MacMurray) feels sorry for shoplifter Lee Leander (Barbara Stanwyck) when his maneuvers in court result in her being in jail over Christmas. He pays her bail, then offers to drop her off at her mother's for the holiday on his way home. When John sees how loveless Lee's mother is, he changes his mind and takes her home with him to spend Christmas with his mother and aunt. Over the course of the week, John and Lee fall in love. John's mother likes Lee but cautions her about derailing John's career. Back in court, John attempts to lose the case by being overly aggressive. Lee realizes she can only be with him if she pays for the crimes she's committed, so she pleads guilty. John vows to marry her when she gets out of prison. |
