| Description: | Paul (Charlton Heston) and Joseph (Harry Guardino) are sent behind Nazi lines into Rome to relay information to the Allied army in the Anzio beachhead. The two spies take up with the Massimo family which has two grown daughters, Antonella (Elsa Martinelli) and Rosalba. Joseph falls in love with Rosalba even though she's pregnant by another man who has left her. Paul and Antonella don't get along at first. When the Nazis close in on the radio, the spies are sent pigeons to send messages. Desperate to feed her family, Antonella cooks the pigeons. Her kid brother then steals more from the Nazis so Paul doesn't find out. When Paul finds out his messages are going straight to Nazi HQ, he makes up a story about low morale among the Germans. What he doesn't know is that there is one American pigeon left. When it takes Paul's message to Anzio, it finally prompts the American general to take Rome. Paul promises to come back after the war to Antonella. |
