Description:A dramatized version of the Boxer Rebellion and the events that took place in the foreign legation where the armed forces and diplomats of 11 nations held off attack until help could arrive. Sir Arthur Robertson (David Niven) was the British ambassador who set policy. Maj. Matt Lewis (Charlton Heston) was the U.S. Marine officer who led the defense. Baroness Ivanoff (Ava Gardner) was a disgraced Russian countess who had a fling with Lewis and then was killed. A running story throughout the movie was the 13-year-old half-Chinese daughter of one of Lewis' men. When the father is killed, Lewis promises to talk with the girl but events keep putting it off. At the end, as he rides out of the city, he lifts the girl up onto his saddle and takes her with him.

Review - 55 Days at Peking

An impressive effort. The battle scenes were, for the most part, unconvincing. It could have done a much better job of explaining conditions under siege. While the extras were Chinese (hired from Chinese restaurants and laundries all over Europe), the Chinese leaders were clearly Caucasian and very unconvincing Chinese. In the end, the only person whose fate I really cared about was the little half-caste girl. Gardner's character, in particular, was dull and unsympathetic.
