Description:Unsubtle movie about a driven doctor, Lucas (Robert Mitchum) who expects perfection from everyone else and from himself. When he doesn't have the money to finish medical school, he marries nurse Kristina (Olivia de Havilland) for hers. She loves him, but he only uses her. The only other person who cares about him is his friend and fellow-doctor Al (Frank Sinatra). After graduating, Luke works with Dr. Runkleman in a small city. Kristina wants to start a family, but Luke ignores her. He has an affair with a widow (Gloria Grahame), but regrets it an calls it off. But it's too late. Kristina kicks him out for the affair, for not noticing she's pregnant, and for their loveless marriage. When Runkleman has a heart attack, Luke operates, but makes a mistake and Runkleman dies. Luke, faces with his own imperfection, goes to Kristina and asks for help and she accepts him back.

Review - Not as a Stranger

Not my usual type of movie, but it kept my interest. de Haviland was good as the long-suffering wife. Mitchum plays cold and aloof well. It was all a bit over-blown—especially the scene with the panting, excited horses interspersed with shots of Luke and Grahame's character staring into each others eyes and kissing.
