Description:Highly fictionalized account of the career of John Clum (Audie Murphy), a seminary student who was appointed as agent for the Apache reservation near Tucson. He kicked the Army off the reservation and instituted limited self-government, including an Apache police force. He gained the trust of the Indians, and in return, they "gave" him Tianay (Anne Bancroft), a widow who soon fell in love with John. But John was engaged to Mary (Pat Crowley), so, although he allowed Tianay (and her son) to stay with him as housekeeper, he didn't take her as his wife. Even so, when Mary arrived, she was jealous. When Geronimo came north from Mexico and tried to get the reservation Indians to join him in war, they stood with John. He was soon demoted to a secondary role under the Army, but continued to fight for the rights of the Apaches.

Review - Walk the Proud Land

The part that was true is that a seminary student named John Clum was appointed agent and gave the Apaches limited self-government. He gained their trust and stood with him against Geronimo. But his "reign" only lasted three years before the Army took over again and hostilities broke out again. In real life, Mary died only three years after they were married, and John moved into town and bought a newspaper.

But the movie was interesting. Bancroft and Crowley were good as the competing women who learned to understand each other. Murphy has a lot of screen presence for a short guy.
