Description:Andrew Craig (Paul Newman), alcoholic novelist with writer's block, wins the Nobel Prize for his early works. He reluctantly travels to Sweden where he meets Inger (Elke Sommer) who has been assigned as his guide. He also meets Max Stratman (Edward G. Robinson), another winner. But when he sees Max the next day, he's convinced its a different man. He investigates—along the way finding a corpse that later disappears, getting thrown into the harbor, getting stranded in the country by Max's niece Emily (Diane Baker), and hiding out at a nudist club. Andrew gets closer to the truth but can't convince Inger or the police. He figures out that the real Max has been kidnapped and is being taken back to Russia where he will be forced to do science for the Commies. The Commies kidnap Inger, but Andrew figures out that she and Max are onboard a ship heading for Russia. He boards and rescues them, then gets to the hall in time for the real Max to receive his prize, for the bad guys to get caught, and for him to receive his own reward. He and Inger fall in love.

Reviews for The Prize

Review - Prize, The

I didn't expect much from this movie, not realizing that, while involving danger and deadly plots, was played somewhat for laughs. It felt like a Hitchcock movie. Newman was great as Andrew, although the drunken stumbling would conveniently disappear when the plot needed it too. Elke Sommer, who I'm not a great fan of, was good in this, and it was a a bit of rollicking fun.
