Description:On a remote base in the Pacific, a squadron only has one operational plane left. They expect an attack from a nearby Japanese carrier. The C.O. picks George (Franchot Tone) as the pilot because he has an idea to strap a bomb under his fighter to wipe out the carrier rather than trying to fight all the Japanese planes. While he's on his mission, his mates tell his story to the C.O.

In the flashback, Vito (Gene Kelly) tells how he and George both loved Freddie (Marsha Hunt), but she was engaged to George. But then the two men, both lawyers, began working for a crooked governor and lost their moral compass. Freddie left George and moved away. When their actions result in the death of a girl, George decides to fight back. He helps get the governor voted out of office and put in jail. The two men meet again in fighter school, and Vito arranges to get George and Freddie back together and encourages them to get married — which they do a day before George goes off to war and dies.

Review - Pilot #5

Wartime propaganda that points out the evils of fascism. Kelly was OK as the friend with moral issues. Hunt was good as Freddie. But Tone was a terrible choice to play the hero. Whatever emotion he was supposed to be showing, he looked like he was having spasms.
