Description:Theater director Matt Saxon (Robert Montgomery) is an arrogant, manipulative jerk who demands, cons, and contrives that everyone bow to his wishes. Famous author Eric Busch (John Payne) wants to try his hand at writing a play and takes it to Saxon. He's soon under the sway of Saxon, to the disgust of his wife Janet (Susan Hayward). Pretty soon Saxon is demanding money from Eric and even conniving to separate him from Janet. Janet finally has enough and leaves, which jars Eric into realizing that Saxon is all noise and no substance. As Saxon continues to offend people around him and sinks lower into bankruptcy and irrelevance, Eric finds another director who wants to do his play—as it was written before Saxon ruined it. When Saxon begins criticizing Janet, Eric slugs him and goes back to his wife. Audrey Totter plays a singer who is in love with Saxon but eventually has enough of his tricks and dumps him.

Review - Saxon Charm, The

Montgomery, as Saxon, was thoroughly unlikeable, as he was supposed to be. Payne, as Busch, was rather a blank. Hayward as the long-suffering wife, and Totter, as the long-suffering girlfriend, were both excellent, although the dramatics were overplayed at times.
