Review - Secret of Monte Cristo, The
Some nice scenery and a lot of enthusiasm by the actors, but the plot really didn't make much sense or have much of a point.

| Description: | Colonel Jackson and his daughter Pauline (Patricia Bredin) are on their way to Italy. The Colonel has one-fourth of a map to treasure hidden on the island of Monte Cristo, and he's going to meet those with the other three segments. On the way, they run into ex-solider Captain Adam Corbett (Rory Calhoun) and hire him as an armed escort. Along the way, they are attacked by bandits and the Colonel is killed, but before he dies, he pledges Adam to take care of Pauline. They meet the others and head to the island, but before they find the treasure, they are taken captive by Renato, the ruler of a gang who controls the island. There's squabbling and betrayals, plenty of swordfights and a shipwreck. In the end, one of the treasure-seekers, Boldini, brings his band of thugs to kill everyone and take the treasure for himself. He also takes Pauline prisoner. Adam and Renato, now teamed up, ride in pursuit. There are more sword fights. In the end, Boldini and all his men are killed. But the treasure is now on the bottom of the ocean in the wrecked ship. Renato rides off laughing (which is weird because all his men are dead). Adam and Pauline kiss. |
